Resettlement and Acculturation

We provide case management and counseling to refugees, primarily from the Soviet Union, beyond initial services to help them adapt to life in the United States.  Our goal is to empower newly resettled refugees to assist integration into mainstream services, and to alleviate stress that normally accompanies the immigration process.  We understand how important it is to have preventive services for the Jewish immigrant community.  For older individuals immigration can become a threat to stability in the later stages of life, and adjustment to a new culture may take time.

The JFS case managers continue to address the ongoing needs of the Jewish refugee population.  We provide services to at-risk elderly and disabled refugees, and we will continue to provide them the critical foundation of essential assistance.

We help refugees with information about availability of community resources, thereby ensuring access to those resources.  Additionally, we provide translation services, assisting refugees in filling out paperwork, making calls to other agencies, arranging appointments, and interpreting over the phone during conference calls. The service of translation of documents is limited to official documents or correspondence. For further information, contact Laura Breitberg at 913-327-8254 or lbreitberg@jfskc.org.
