Our Programs

KesherKC/Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is our response to the growing need for food assistance in Kansas City. Volunteers sort food donations, pick up donations from food drives and local grocery stores, organize and staff the pantry during appointments, make food deliveries to homebound clients, and assist clients who come to our pantry to shop. Learn about KesherKC & the Food Pantry.

Older Adult Services

When you volunteer as a JET Express driver, you are giving an older adult their independence and freedom. Use your own vehicle to give rides to older adults, helping them stay active, independent, and connected to their community. Choose the rides you want online through Ride Scheduler, and give based on your schedule. Are you handy around the house or computer savvy? Become a Help@Home volunteer!

Holiday

Our holiday projects help Jewish individuals and families feel more connected to our community at Passover, Rosh Hashanah, and Hanukkah. You can help by donating holiday food, adopting a family for Hanukkah, or making home deliveries. These projects are great for individuals and groups, allowing you to spend quality time with family and friends.

Chaplaincy

This group of dedicated volunteers is integral to the JFS Chaplaincy Program and fulfilling the mitzvah of “bikkur holim” – visiting the sick. Volunteers receive extensive training to work in the healthcare community serving the spiritual needs of Jewish patients in area hospitals and eldercare centers. Volunteers provide connection and support to those who might otherwise be alone or disconnected from the community. A warm and nurturing team enhances your own personal and spiritual growth.

B’nai Mitzvah Projects

Becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a special time. It includes accepting new responsibilities as an adult, which include embracing the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam, and making a difference in the world around you. We can help you define a meaningful Mitzvah Project or link you to rewarding volunteer opportunities for community service projects.

We all play a role in making Kansas City a safer, healthier, and better place to live. Bring your passion and energy to Jewish Family Services no one has to navigate life alone.

From office support to providing direct client services, volunteers help throughout JFS’ many programs. As a JFS volunteer, you will enjoy:

    • Meaningful opportunities.
    • Flexible time commitment and schedules.
    • Variety of in-person and remote options.
    • Individual, family, and group opportunities.

    SAFETY MESSAGE

The health and safety of our staff, volunteers, and clients are our top priority. As an agency working with vulnerable populations, our volunteer opportunities align with public health recommendations to ensure the safety of our clients and volunteers. There are many ways for you to be involved with JFS and give back to our community while keeping yourself healthy and safe. We look forward to seeing you!

Sophie Shafter Finds a Volunteer Home at Jewish Family Services

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and Jewish Family Services (JFS) is blessed with wonderful volunteers, including Sophie Safter. While Shafter has lived in many cities in her adult life, she has always focused on connecting with the Jewish community no matter the place. While she moved to the Kansas City area about eight years ago, […]

May is Older Adults Awareness Month

May is designated as Older Adults Awareness Month, focusing on the contributions of older adults (60-plus) and reaffirming our commitment to serving them. Over 300,000 living in the metro are 60- plus, and that number is likely to increase as the babyboomers hit retirement age. For Jewish Family Services, sustaining the quality of life throughout […]

March Volunteer of the Month – Rebekah Foote

If you’ve dropped by the offices of Jewish Family Services, you might have caught a glimpse of Rebekah Foote. With a smile on her face, Rebekah is hard at work, head buried in files or at the computer helping JFS with database clean-up and record reconciliation. Since 2021, Foote has provided back-end office support to […]
